Can’t Enroll In A Course?

Reasons Why You May Not Be Able to Enroll in a Course

Prerequisites exist because the higher-level course builds on the knowledge acquired in the prerequisite course. Read at the course description in the catalog carefully to examine prerequisite requirements. “And” means you need to meet all prerequisites listed. “Or” means you only need to meet one of those listed.

Prerequisites can include:

  • Class standing (e.g. juniors or higher) – based on number of credits earned by the time the class begins
  • Course prerequisites – must be completed prior to taking a class

  • Credit maximums refer to the maximum number of credits you may enroll in a particular semester.
  • You will need to request excess credit to enroll in additional credits.
  • See the Excess Credit Authorization form Excess Credit Authorization Form (includes link) which includes a summary of the rules regarding maximum credits permitted. See also: information on maximum credits for Honors students.

  • Review your lab, lecture, and discussion times. You cannot enroll in overlapping courses, even by one minute.

Holds can prevent students from accessing services such as (but not limited to) registering for classes, moving into residence halls, using the Recreation Center, and accessing library services.  Access to these services are reinstated once holds have been resolved and lifted. Holds can only be lifted by the office that placed the hold.

Check your holds long before your pick time in order to allow for ample time to resolve the hold. It can take up to 24 hours after a hold is lifted for all services to be reinstated.

  • View your enrollment appointment time in Student Admin
  • The online registration system closes for continuing students in mid-May, continuing through summer orientation. It reopens again for schedule changes in late July, continuing through the 10th day of classes.

  • Some classes may allow over-enrollment, but others do not.
  • Typically, you can reach out to the course instructor to inquire about overenrollment.
  • Procedures for issuing permission numbers vary by school/college and department.

Reserve Capacity means that any remaining open seats are reserved for a certain population of students.

  • Check the course details at classes.uconn.edu to see if the seats are reserved, and if so, if you fall within the group of students eligible to enroll.
  • If you do not meet the reserved seat requirements, determine whether the course has a waitlist in Student Admin. If so, place yourself on the waitlist.
  • After RC eligible students enroll, remaining open seats (or seats that open as others drop) may be given to students on the waitlist.
  • Before fall registration, the university reserves seats in courses that are part of “package schedules” – a process that is used to ease course registration for incoming freshman and transfer students. In these “packages”, sections have been chosen to form a cluster of courses without conflicts, and priority is given to students in specific majors. These seats (RC-Block Enrollment) are not available to continuing students.

  • Any student wishing to enroll needs instructor permission.
  • Contact the instructor directly and briefly explain your preparation and why you wish to enroll in the course.
  • If approved by the instructor, they will provide you with access to enroll in the course.

If you have enrolled in the course twice before, you need consent from your advisor and dean to enroll a third time.

  • If enrolling in a course for a second time, Student Admin will alert you that it is a repeat course.

You will not be able to enroll in a course that you have previously passed until all other students have had the chance to register for it.

What’s the Difference Between Prerequisite, Reserved Capacity, and Instructor Consent?

Prerequisite: Prerequisites include specific courses that must be taken prior to enrolling in a class, but could include required class standing (e.g., juniors or higher; only open to freshmen and sophomores). You cannot waitlist for the course if you do not meet all the prerequisites. Prerequisites are listed in course descriptions in the Undergraduate Catalog.

Reserved Capacity (RC): Specific seats are reserved for certain types of students (e.g., specific majors; Honors students; freshmen and sophomores only). RCs are not the same as prerequisites included in the catalog description, so others may waitlist for the class (if the class has a waitlist available). After the designated population of students register for classes, the remaining open seats may be issued to those on the waitlist or the course may be opened to all students seeking to register.

Instructor Consent: Any student wishing to enroll needs permission from the instructor. This means you must contact the instructor for a permission to enroll. “Instructor consent” will appear in the class info. Even if granted permission to enroll, the student must typically still enroll in the course via Student Admin.
