Academic advising is rooted in UConn’s mission of teaching, learning, and student success.
Undergraduate Advising Mission & Values
Advising is a series of collaborative and purposeful interactions that teach and empower undergraduates to be independent decision makers and self-advocates as they pursue their unique educational, professional, and personal goals.
Through relationships with both students and campus partners, UConn’s advisors equip students with equitable and inclusive access to knowledge, resources, and opportunities; teach students the skills requisite for navigating the university environment; reduce barriers to academic success and persistence; and facilitate the growth and development of today’s leaders and global citizens.
How Advising Works at UConn
Undergraduate students at the University of Connecticut are enrolled in one of nine schools and colleges, the Academic Center for Exploratory Students (ACES), the Bachelor of General Studies Program (BGS), or as non-degree students. Each school, college, and regional campus has an advising center or office with oversight over undergraduate advising, and undergraduates are assigned a faculty or professional staff advisor based on their area of study.
Advising Centers and Offices
Advising centers in schools/colleges and on regional campuses serve as a resource to students, faculty, and staff on a wide range of advising matters, including:
- Learning about academic requirements, policies, and resources
- Requesting permission to register for excess credit, to add or drop a course, or receive a late withdrawal from a course
- Navigating curricular substitutions or policy exemptions
- Implementing best practices for effective undergraduate advising and student success
- Supporting students in and throughout the University’s Academic Standing process, including academic notice, dismissal, and appeals of academic dismissal, as well as returning to good standing
The Office of Undergraduate Advising
The Office of Undergraduate Advising provides leadership, advocacy, and strategic planning for UConn’s undergraduate advising community. We cultivate a culture of collaboration across UConn’s five campuses by:
- ensuring effective, equitable, and culturally competent advising practices,
- sharing critical communications, resources, and support with undergraduates as well as the academic advising community,
- delivering robust advisor onboarding, training, and professional development, and
- facilitating connections and collaboration between academic advisors and campus partners.
